Procurement: This union procures on an average 2.0 lakhs lits of milk every day from its 748 Primary milk Co-Operatives. There is an inbuilt capacity for processing 3.0 lakhs lits per day and about 4 lakhs lits of milk can be dried in two powder plants having provision to dry 10 Mts and 30 Mts per day respectively. 12 Mts of butter and around 12 Mts of Ghee can also be produced in this dairy. Fodder
Development Program: Under
the fodder development program, The Erode Union has arranged for the
cultivation of sufficient
fodder and for its distribution to the farmer members to meet their
requirements. Presently, nearly 1301 hectares of land is under this
program. Embryo
Transfer Technology: Embryo
Transfer is one of the most advanced technologies in cattle breeding and
is being implemented
in the Erode Union. The embryos both fresh and foreign, received from
high yielding elite donor cows transferred to local non-descript recipient
cows belonging to the farmer members. These embryo transfers result in
the birth of good high yielding progeny. Fertility
Campaigns: Fertility
and health campaigns are organized with in the district. Thousands of
'Infertile cows and buffalos are treated for the revival of their
reproductive ability. Vaccinations are made against infectious diseases
and in addition de-worming and other treatment are also being given.
Such campaigns help to minimize the number of Infertile animals in the
district which in turn helps in the enhancement of milk production.
Calf
Rearing Scheme: The
calf rearing scheme is being implemented in the Erode District under the
aegis of the
Government of India. Nearly 200 female calves have been
identified among the animals of the producers of Erode District. Under this scheme. for the years
1996-1998. subsidized cattle feed and subsidies for calf rearing were
being given and "regular de-worming for the identified
calves were done. An amount of Rs 10.52 Lakhs was allotted to
this scheme for 200 calves during the year 1996-1998. Foot
and Mouth vaccination: With
the help of the National Dairy Development Board, the Union was
vaccinating the animals owned by its milk producers for protection
against Foot & mouth disease. The Union now has taken up this
program for implementation on its own.
Induced
Lactation Scheme: Induced
Lactation Scheme is a unique and innovative scheme which was earlier
tried under lab conditions by scientists. This scheme has been now tried
under field conditions in the Erode District under the aegis of the
Erode Milk Union. It is the only one of its kind in India and perhaps
the entire world. Induced lactation Scheme is funded by the Tamilnadu
Co-operative Union under 100% grant basis and implemented by Erode
District Cooperative Milk Producers' Union. The
objective of the scheme is to convert the unproductive and barren
animals into Fertile and productive animals. This is done by giving a
series of hormonal injections and other supportive treatment to the
barren animals. Through this scheme a farmer then becomes the owner of a
milch and pregnant animal whose market value his been thus tripled. The
scheme was started on 01.12.1995. The Tamilnadu Cooperative Union had
sanctioned an amount of Rs 29.34 Lakhs. So for it has released 14.67
Lakhs. The target is to cover 3000 animals within a period of 2 years
initially. Later it has been extended for two more –years. The Union
has so far covered 1302 animals. The average milk yield per animal is
5.2 lits per day, and the pregnancy rate is 85%. The Erode Union has
requested for further extension of the scheme for three more years and
the decision of Tamilnadu Cooperative Union is awaited. Automatic
Ghee filling Machine: A
new fully automatic ghee filling and packing machine has been installed
to pack up to 5 MT of ghee every day. The cost of the machine is Rs 9.29
Lakhs and is the first of its kind in Tamilnadu. Computerization: The
Union has introduced computerization in the various departments like
payroll, bookkeeping, personnel, milk billing, purchase, marketing etc.
Eventually, it is planned to computerize all the functional areas for
increasing accuracy and rapid access to information and the integrated
functioning of the Union. Achievements: The
average daily milk procurement during the accounting years 1998-99 and
1999-2000 was 1,71,138 lits and 1,95,731 lits respectively. During May
1999, a record 242153 lits was procured on a single day procurement
which is the highest in the history of this Union During this accounting year 1999-2000 butter production has been the highest ever since the inception of the Union. About 3,037 tones of butter have been produced. About 4,729 tones of skim milk powder has also been produced by the Erode Union.
